Coaching for Mental Health

Support from a qualified coach to enable you to identify strategies to overcome conditions such as anxiety and depression, or to simply improve your overall mental health.

What is coaching for mental health?

Coaching is a supportive process that helps you identify what action you need to take in order to overcome specific conditions or simply to improve your general mental wellness. We understand that mental wellness is different for every single person and everyone needs to find their own path to better mental health. For example, mindfulness and meditation may be great for one individual but may actually cause another significant distress.

We can work with you to help you understand what changes will work for you and fit with the lifestyle you want to lead. We believe improved mental health can be achieved through making realistic, achievable changes. Often dramatic, large scale changes are not sustainable and cause people to relapse. By making simple, effective changes you are more likely to sustain new habits, to build on these in the future and achieve your goal of improved mental wellness.

Isn’t coaching the same as therapy such as counselling?

No. Coaching is a supportive process but is not a substitute for therapy where it is needed. As part of the coaching process we may recommend that you consider therapy and can signpost you to either NHS or private services.

Do I need to have a diagnosis of a specific mental health condition?

No. We can support anyone either with or without a diagnosis. You may have fairly significant debilitating symptoms or you may just simply want to improve your overall wellbeing.

What is the process and how many sessions do I need?

The first coaching session will be slightly longer than normal sessions. This enables us to gain some detailed information about your background and what your specific support needs are. We will agree some initial goals and look at any specific actions you need to take between the first session and your next one.

We can agree how many sessions are right for you, the choice is entirely yours. Most people find that around six sessions is sufficient to support them in achieving substantial results.

Coaching sessions are currently held via Zoom.

Is coaching an easy way to improve my mental health?

No. The coaching process can be challenging and will require you to put in some hard work and at times consider some difficult questions and choices. You will decide how dramatic the changes are that you need to make and want to make with the support of your coach.

Improving mental health can mean making some tough decisions and making some significant changes in terms of work, lifestyle and relationships. Yet it can also mean just making some small, yet positive and effective changes that are barely visible to the outside world. We can help you to identify what is right for you.

Do I have to do yoga?

No. You can incorporate yoga into your coaching programme or not, the decision is entirely yours.

I’m not sure coaching is for me?

You can choose to book a free 20 minute initial consultation to have an informal chat about the process to help you decide if coaching is right for you.

Who will be my coach?

Susan, the founder of The Wellbeing and Wellness Coach will be your coach. Susan is enjoying recovery from a range of conditions including ME/CFS, complex trauma, anxiety, depression and post natal depression and understands the impact living with these conditions can have. Her personal story of struggle spans two decades, during which she found it very difficult to be acknowledged and to access the support she really needed. Recovery has meant making some tough choices but she still has many vices; including food and wine!

Since overcoming the conditions she experienced, she has qualified as both a life and health coach in order to support other people find their own route into and through recovery.

How much do sessions cost?

An optional 20 minute free of charge discovery session can be booked to help you decide if coaching is right for you.

£45 per session pay as you go

£240 for a block of six sessions – £40 per session

The initial session will be slightly longer at 60 to 90 minutes to ensure detailed background information so we can offer you the best possible coaching support. Subsequent sessions will last 45 to 60 minutes. A written report will be sent to you following each session summarising any agreed actions and areas for you to reflect on.
